– midcentury modern meets contemporary with white Corian countertops

When the creative and co ee-loving clients of this Taranaki home asked for a kitchen to reference its original mid-century modern features on a very small blueprint, designer Annika Rowson of Rowson Kitchens & Joinery stood up to the challenge.

Rowson maximised a space of approximately 7m by 3m by keeping the combination of components to a minimum and focussing on high-quality materials in a highly functional design.

Keruing plywood makes up the warming and on-theme timber cabinetry, as well as a 28mm-thick benchtop frame, which pulls the look together. Topped by 12mm-thick Corian in Glacier White, the benchtop is both fresh and enduring.

The clients chose Corian over alternative options because it is soft and warm to touch, as well as hygienic and seamless.

A soothing and easy-to-live-with colour, Glacier White contrasts perfectly with the warmth of the ply, the olive green tiles from Middle Earth and the grey glass-blown Monmouth Glass Studio pendant lights.

The homeowners were conscious of budget, but Corian proved to be cost-e ective when used in this way. It’s also very reliable, with a 10-year warranty covering installation and new ownership.

As well as satisfying the clients, the design impressed the judges of this year’s National Kitchen & Bathroom Association awards, winning the title of Best Compact Kitchen against tough competition.
