What is hair colour contouring and how does it work?

Hair contouring is a technique where colour is used to add lightness (highlights) or darkness (lowlights) to certain areas, in ways that shape the face. For example, if we want to create the illusion of a narrower neck, we might add dark pieces through the back area closest to the neck to make it appear smaller.

Does face shape matter?

An oval is considered to be the perfect face shape, so we were always taught to add or remove weight, shift hair direction or add colour using light and shadow to try and create the illusion of an oval face. The rules might remain the same but there is always room for our own interpretation of what beauty is. So, does the perfect face shape exist and am I always looking for it? No.

Is there a rule for light and dark hair colours?

Light and dark colours all require care. The new Luster Lock Treatment from Joico is incredible for home care. It’s quick, easy to apply and leaves the hair stronger and healthier with unreal shine. For maintenance, Joico’s Colour Balance Blue Shampoo and Conditioner work well for orange tone reduction for brunette hand-painted ( balyage) hair.

Can I contour my own hair?

Colour contouring should only be carried out by a professional, so ask a hairdresser for their recommendations. For a bit of DIY fun though, check out the new Instatints by Joico – coloured hairsprays which allow you to contour your own hair by adding pops of colour that wash out.

Why would you recommend colour contouring?

I recommend contouring to everyone, because it’s a beautiful bespoke colour technique. Even if you step into it just a little to begin with, it’s definitely the trend to try for summer.
