National Team Volkswagen Launch
All the team was present at the launch with the exception of Janelle who was over in Canada finalising her planning for the upcoming season.
It is over ten years since the National Federation has run a National Teams training programme, the results of the programme set up in early 2005 are already beginning to bear fruit with Nicola Campbell scoring the best female International giant slalom result in recent history, Mark Bridgwater scoring 4 top 15 places at the NorAm speed events at Lake Louise, and 3 alpine athletes selected to the 2006 Olympic Winter Games; Nicola Campbell and Erika McLeod competed in the slalom and giant slalom, Nicola coming home a creditable 35th with Erika in 40th, neither girl finished the testing giant slalom course. Mickey Ross competed in the slalom only, and after a disastrous first run redeemed himself on the second run to finish in 31st place. Following the Winter Games Mickey had a great run of results taking to the podium 3 times in slalom, his preferred discipline, finishing the season off with a 3rd at the British National Championships. Erika has since retired but Nicola and Mickey, along with the rest of the team, are already working towards the World Championships in Are Sweden in 2007 and onto the next Winter Olympics to be held in 2010 in Canada. Younger members of the teams will be focussing on the Junior World Championships in Flachau Austria. The Volkswagen National Teams will be training and competing around New Zealand throughout the season, watch out for them a their training camps at Coronet Peak from July 12th, Mt Hutt from August 28th and September 27th. The teams will be competing at the Southern Cup at Coronet Peak August 15-18; Volkswagen National Championships September 10-12; ANC Speed at Mt Hutt September 13-14 and the ANC Finals at Mt Ruapehu September 18-21.
