THE BIG WET
There was plenty of warning of the deluge that hit South Canterbury on Friday and it just kept on falling.
A total of 84mm fell, with many low-lying areas flooded.
While I was keeping dry on my days off, colleagues were out in the rain finding out as much information as they could about what was happening in the community. Thanks to their tireless work, the public could keep up to date via cellphones and other electronic devices.
Civil Defence, Police, the Fire Service, contractors, engineers, and linespeople were all kept busy as power cuts hit some areas, roads flooded and the odd retaining wall collapsed.
By Monday the remnants of the deluge could be seen; ponds on the Highfield Golf Course, gardens sodden, and the big cleanup in full swing.
For those whose properties were unscathed, it looks like the infrastructure coped pretty well.
However those who had to evacuate or close their businesses will no doubt have many questions for authorities. SOUTH CANTERBURY HERALD NEWSROOM: Phone (03) 687 1346. EMAIL: email@example.com REPORTER: Esther Ashby-Coventry (03) 687 1318, firstname.lastname@example.org
