Hall rebuild almost completed

South Canterbury Herald - - YOUR LOCAL NEWS - AL WILLIAMS

Work to rebuild the fire-gutted West End Hall is expected to be completed in the next two months but the final cost has not yet been calculated.

The West End Hall, on Maltby Ave, was gutted by fire in June last year, with both its kitchen and roof extensively damaged.

It is getting a major rebuild, at an approved budget of $910,000. However, the final cost ‘‘will not be known until the work is completed’’, a Timaru District Council spokesman confirmed last week.

The spokesman said ‘‘substantial completion is expected in the next two months with some tidy up work to be completed after that’’.

Work on the hall started in January and was initially expected to be completed by June.

‘‘In 2016 there were a number of issues relating to insurance matters that took a significant amount of time to resolve,’’ he said.

‘‘Once the builders commenced work in February this year, progress has been as expected. But the wet autumn and winter, along with some extra work, has necessitated a six week time extension.’’

The council decided to include some upgrades in the rebuild to bring the building up to a higher standard for hall users.

Improvements included the installation of heat pumps, double-glazed windows, insulation and a new toilet area.

New design features included a meeting room, bar, purpose built storage room, upgraded kitchen including commercial dishwasher, increased storage including lockable storage, pantry, three fridges (two in the adjoining bar and one in the kitchen), oven and rangehood. ‘‘The major rebuild job started with demolition work in January 2017 and continued with the rebuilding of the facility.

‘‘Most of the rebuild work is completed, except for the replacement of the water damaged floor.

‘‘This phase will take several weeks and will be followed by outdoor work before the contractors are completely finished,’’ the spokesman said.

Insurance was covering the cost of replacement and the council was contributing a ‘‘small amount for improvements‘‘.

‘‘The final cost will not be known until the work is completed, but will be generally in accordance with the approved budget of $910,000 plus council’s contribution covering enhancements and improvements.’’
