Thunder shot dead

South Canterbury Herald - - YOUR LOCAL NEWS - BEN AULAKH

A South Canterbury couple believe their prized pack horse was likely mistakenly shot by a spotlighting hunter.

Adventure Horse Trekking owners John and Angie Wall offer pioneer-style treks from their station at Mt Studholme, inland from Waimate.

Nine-year old Thunder was one of a herd wintering in a paddock at the back of the station.

After July’s widespread flooding, John Wall went to check on some cattle and found Thunder.

He had a mouthful of grass, which suggested he had been feeding when he had been shot, she said.

‘‘We think a hunter has mistaken him for a deer ... we honestly think it’s been an accident and we just wish somebody would come forward.’’

She said the loss had hit the couple hard.

Sergeant Kevin Reynolds, of Waimate, said the shooting was being investigated.

He said police didn’t have a lot of information to go on.
