Cage fight for funds
A fundraiser for South Canterbury’s wrestling team.
A mixed martial arts event will take place inside a two-metre-high cage to raise money for a Timaru sports club.
Two fighters, and a referee, will enter an eight-sided cage to fight in the fundraiser, South Canterbury Olympic Wrestling Club coach Pete Berry said.
‘‘And away they go. It’s just a combination of different contact sports. Obviously, the better man wins,’’ Berry said.
The mixed martial arts event will be the eighth annual fundraising event the club has hosted, Berry said.
This year money made at the The Kodiak Cage Wars event will go towards purchasing a van for the club.
There will be a live band playing music throughout the evening and two celebrity fighters, although Berry said the identity of the two celebrities was being kept under wraps.
‘‘I can’t tell you that, it’s top secret.’’
He said everyone would enjoy the event.
‘‘Everyone who likes a bit of action.’’
Tickets will cost $35 and corporate tables were also available for $1500. The tables would include drinks and supper for the evening.
Corporate tables would seat 10 people.
Berry said the club was hoping to attract several hundred people.
The Kodiak Cage Wars will be held from 7pm at the Southern Trust Events Centre on Morgans Rd, Timaru, on September 30.
Tickets went on sale on September 1 at Karmec Creations and Independent Engineers.
