More people to advance vote
Rangitata remains slightly ahead of national enrolment rates as early voting for the general election kicks off.
There has been an increase in the number of advance voting places around the country, with more people expected to vote early this election.
Advance voting began on Monday.
As of September 5, the most up to date figures available, 89.44 per cent of eligible voters in the Rangitata electorate had enrolled.
That figure was higher in the Waitaki electorate, with 94.07 per cent enrolled.
Nationwide, 89.11 per cent of eligible voters had enrolled.
Older voters are leading the enrolment rates in the electorate, with 97.46 per cent of voters aged between 65 - 69 enrolled.
The age group with the lowest enrolments so far was those aged between 25 and 29, at 79.74 per cent.
EasyVote packs are due to start arriving in voters’ letter boxes this week, with 3.16 million to be delivered over the next week.
Chief electoral officer Alicia Wright said EasyVote packs are being sent to all voters who were enrolled before August 23 and include a personalised EasyVote card, which makes voting quicker.
‘‘There has been a big increase in advance voting over the past two elections, so this election, we are providing even more voting places in convenient locations where people can cast an early vote,’’ she said.
‘‘People will also be able to enrol, check or update their enrolment details at any advance voting place – so they’ll be able to enrol and vote at the same time.’’
Rangitata voters based in South Canterbury will be able to cast an advanced vote at a pop-up voting centre at 187-189 Stafford St, the Timaru Indoor Bowls Stadium on Ranui Ave, or in Temuka at St John’s Hall, 47 King St.
For voters wanting to cast an advanced vote for the Waitaki electorate, that can be done in Fairlie at the Mackenzie Community Centre, the Library Service Centre in Geraldine, the Mt Cook Community Hall at Mt Cook, Twizel Area School in Twizel, the Waimate Event Centre, Centennial Hall on WaitohiTemuka Rd, or at the two Timaru locations.
