‘‘This year it’s the turn of the West End club.’’

‘‘It’s ba­si­cally a day when ev­ery­body gets to­gether, dusts off their whites and their cro­quet mal­lets, and cel­e­brates the sea­son.’’

Most cro­quet clubs hosted their own ‘have a go day’ but any­one keen to give the sport a go would be wel­comed at the open day, she said.

The sport was en­joyed by peo­ple of all ages.

‘‘If you’ve got a grand­mother who plays cro­quet you’ll be hav­ing a hit prob­a­bly on the lawn at fam­ily events.’’

The Cro­quet South Can­ter­bury As­so­ci­a­tion, which cov­ered Ash­bur­ton to Oa­maru and in­land to Mt Hutt, had a num­ber of teams at­tend­ing the na­tional fi­nals of the sec­ondary schools’ cro­quet com­pe­ti­tion, in Hamil­ton on Septem­ber 23 and 24, Mac­nab said.

She did not be­lieve there were any teams from Ti­maru, but teams from Mt Hutt Col­lege and Waitaki Boys’ High School were at­tend­ing.

Cro­quet South Can­ter­bury As­so­ci­a­tion’s open day is on to­day, at the West End Cro­quet Club at West Park, off Maltby Ave, from 11am. All wel­come.
