Funds help alleviate pressure

South Canterbury Herald - - MOTORING - MEGAN SUTHERLAND

The pressures felt by Mackenzie sportspeople and their families in travelling to Timaru and Oamaru may be alleviated with a major fundraiser.

The Hard Labour Weekend event in Twizel has been confirmed for Labour Weekend.

Participants can kayak the Mackenzie canals, or run or bike to raise money for sporting groups in the Twizel community.

The fundraiser focuses on helping children’s sports, and tackling one of the biggest pressures on children and parents who have to travel long distances for sport.

About $20,000 was raised for youth sports from registrations and sponsors last year but there was a hope this year could raise even more, committee member Kevin Moore said.

‘‘The money is so important for our kids here as they have to travel everywhere for sport.’’

This year’s event will be boosted by a new, 30 kilometre kayak marathon. Sport Twizel, which started in November, was also now involved.

Sport Twizel chairman Bevan Newland said travelling for sport practices or games to Oamaru or Timaru was a huge commitment for children and parents.
