Embroiderers celebrate

South Canterbury Herald - - TEMUKA NEWS - RACHAEL COMER

A group of crafty Temuka women has celebrated a special milestone.

The town’s Embroiderers Guild held a 21st birthday party on Monday, an occasion one of its founding members never imagined would happen.

Member Janet Baird said the group was formed as a way for people who enjoyed embroidery to get together and share their talents.

‘‘We put an ad in the paper asking people to a meeting,’’ Baird said.

About 40 people attended the inaugural meeting and from there the group had been going strong ever since, she said.

‘‘We didn’t really think that far ahead,’’ she said, when asked if the group imagined it would still be going strong after 21 years.

The group has about 34 members, with a peak membership of about 70 several years ago. The women meet once a week and enjoy fellowship and helping other members out, Baird said. ‘‘It keeps us active.’’ The guild held a 21st birthday lunch at Temuka’s Trinity Church which included a cake cutting and a display of members’ work.
