Paint offered for floats
With just over two weeks until the first of South Canterbury’s Christmas parades are held, free paint is being offered to those wanting to decorate or spruce up floats.
Paint company Resene, which supports Christmas parades nationwide, has offered the free paint to parade participants wanting to decorate their entry.
Timaru parade organiser Bec Brookland said she was grateful Resene had come on board and speculated that might be all it took to get a few extra floats in the parade this year.
The Santa Claus float had already been given a makeover, and would be a highlight of the event, Brookland said.
Brookland said she hopefully numbers would be boosted at both the parade and the Festival of the Roses with the events held on the same day.
The parade had been going as long as she could remember, and it was ‘‘a community-based parade, relying heavily on schools, sports and church groups for floats’’.
Event organisers are asking people interested in having a float to get in touch as soon as possible, so space could be allocated.
South Canterbury Christmas parades: Temuka - November 25; Geraldine - December 1; Timaru - December 2; Fairlie and Pleasant Point - December 15; Waimate - December 16.
