USE YOUR SENSE
Caroline Bay is in the headlines again. This time two conservation groups are calling for a summertime curfew to keep dogs off Caroline Bay for an extra month, in a bid to protect little blue penguins.
Submissions have been made for the current dog control bylaw, which states dogs are banned from the beach from October 1 until the end of March.
Forest and Bird and the Timaru Penguin Group put in submissions saying the period when dogs were banned should begin on August 1. I’m pretty sure much of this is down to the individual, and practicing some common sense, as we have also been advised numerous times about the need to give leopard seals their space on Caroline Bay.
Little penguins are protected by the Wildlife Act, which is administered by Doc and it advises people can help by leaving penguins alone, keeping dogs on a leash around penguin areas, keeping dogs away from nests, and warning others nearby of the location of nesting penguins.
