Timaru artist’s first exhibition
An up and coming Timaru artist’s first exhibition features a collection of works inspired by nature.
Hamish Beatson, 20, has been painting with Timaru artist Wayne Patrick for about a year.
Beatson said he was inspired by Vincent van Gogh and ‘‘nature in general’’, in particular the night sky; ‘‘the constellations, the moon’’.
The title of his exhibition Contr-artist was a play on the words contrast and artist.
Mum, Kay Beatson, said Hamish was also keen on drawing and writing.
‘‘He draws every single day at home ... I would say he’s a prolific writer.’’
Kay said Hamish was autistic, and art and writing were both good ways for him to express himself.
Patrick said during the previous 12 months he had introduced Hamish to idea of painting on larger canvases.
‘‘He only sort of painted to a certain size. Whether it was a drawing or a painting he wouldn’t go out of that. But of course we’ve managed to get him into great big canvases, which doesn’t sound much but it’s actually huge.’’
Hamish’s 35 paintings will be available for sale under a silent auction. Contr-artist open at 2pm on Wednesday, April 4, at Wayne Patrick Studio of Art in the Royal Arcade. It wil be available for viewing between 12pm and 4pm on April 5 and 6.
Hamish Beatson, 20, will hold his first exhibition Contr-artist in April.
