Meet the new deputy
District mayor Ross Dunlop has appointed Phil Nixon, Tangahoe Ward councillor and chairman of Hawera HIgh School’s board of trustees, as his second-incommand.
The new council, including four newly elected councillors, Steffy McKay, Jack Rangiwahia, Gary Brown and Clem Coxhead, were sworn in at a ceremony in Hawera on Wednesday.
Dunlop said he had chosen Nixon in consultation with the rest of the council.
‘‘I asked every councillor who they thought should be the deputy mayor and I got a pretty strong signal from that. Phil is a secondterm councillor with a long history of governance roles, and he’s a Justice of the Peace. and has been involved in a lot of community organisations.’’
Dunlop said the new council would carry on with the various projects begun by the last one, including the revamp of the Hawera town centre and developing a network of cycleways and walkways in the district.
Nixon said he had been a little surprised with his new role but was looking forward to it.
‘‘I’ve always enjoyed challenges and this is going to be one. There’s some very good things happening with our council and we really have work to do.’’
The upgrade of the town centre was a project he was impatient to see progress.
He said he was grateful for the work of previous councils in spending money where needed on less popular projects such as upgrading water supplies.
