Pilates and wine to get to Egypt

Pilates and wine are not two things that usually go together but then neither are pilates, wine and fundraising.

But that hasn’t stopped one young Hawera Business and Professional Women (BPW) member in her attempts to get to Egypt.

Vivien Johnson has been encouraged to go to the XXIX BPW International Congress in Cairo to represent New Zealand.

In order to get there, Johnson has been fundraising including many raffles.

However, her last attempt was a bit different - she organised a Pilates and Wine night.

‘‘We have done fundraisers before in a theatre, so quite a lot of work has to go into it,’’ she said. ’’No one has done this before and it’s sort of like we can really play with it and there’s minimal organisation.’’

Johnson said the Pilates and Wine night, which took place on Monday September 4, was ‘‘fantastic.

‘‘Everyone really appreciated the wine afterwards,’’ she laughed.

‘‘I have done a session through work that was like a health initiative kind of thing,’’ she said. ’’I know a few people were sore the next day.’’

Johnson hopes to get an international role in BPW out of her trip.

Representative seat, which I did,’’ Johnson said. ’’So myself and another lady are getting nominated for that - I’m going there to hopefully win the seat.’’

Johnson said the international congressestook place every three years and she was ‘‘quite excited’’ to head over.

‘‘I think it’s becoming quite real since the event and it’s really hit me and I’ve realised it’s not that far actually,’’ she said. ’’I have been trying to get there more than enjoying the journey getting there.’’

Johnson said BPW in New Zealand was well known for lobbying at a government level and bringing up issues that concern women.

‘‘We have programmes and projects that assist women,’’ she said. ‘‘For example, to enter and re-enter the workforce... our ambition is to have the equal participation of women and men in power and decision-making roles.’’
