Staff on stand by for Cantab
South Waikato District Council has committed $10,000 from the Mayoral Fund to the Christchurch earthquake disaster and has staff on stand by to help out.
The donation is part of a total of more than $170,000 being gifted by Waikato territorial authorities to earthquake relief – along with other councils in the region.
The Waikato Regional Civil Defence Emergency Management Group is co-ordinating staff from across the Waikato to ensure that relevant people are sent as and when required. A process SWDC is supporting.
‘ ‘ At this stage building inspectors across the country are being called in to assess government buildings, commercial properties and private homes in an effort to get people back into their homes and businesses back up and running,’’ SWDC group manager environment Sharon Robinson said. ‘‘ Our team is on stand by.’’
Mayor Neil Sinclair said the earthquake was ‘‘a stark reminder that we live in a country that regularly faces disasters that have the potential to cause disruption, damage property and take lives.
‘‘It should also remind residents to have their own household emergency plan and emergency checklist ready and up to date,’’ he said.
SWDC will be running a promotional campaign over the next few weeks promoting being prepared for natural disasters.
A Household Emergency Checklist and a Household Emergency Plan are available on the Civil Defence website at www.getthru.govt.nz.
