New loo to be in Putaruru car park

South Waikato District Council hopes Putaruru residents are not surprised when their new public toilets are installed.

On Thursday the council’s Corporate and Environment Committee voted to approve the public toilets with Main St as the site for the facilities.

In late 2009 the council installed toilets in Putaruru’s memorial park, leading to complaints from the community and the block’s eventual removal.

The location of the new toilets was the subject of much publicity and the council consulted on it for five weeks.

The toilets will be in the north-west corner of the car park. Sewerage systems run under the site, though a water pipe will need to be installed across Main St.

The site was the overwhelming favourite among four sites offered to the community, receiving support from 69 per cent of submitters.

The toilets will cost an estimated $165,000.
