Teachers take protest to streets
STRIKE ACTION: PPTA members went on strike last week. Members (pictured) from Forest View High School and Tokoroa High School took to the streets of Tokoroa to voice their concerns. They joined thousands of secondary and intermediate school teachers who were protesting stalled pay negotiation talks as they seek a four per cent pay rise. The one-day strike was the first in eight years for the PPTA after members rejected the Ministry of Education’s offer of 1.5 per cent this year and a further one per cent next year. Negotiations are also over changes to class sizes, noncontact time, health and safety, equality and call-back days, and work conditions.
