Lots on for holiday treks
There are several options for those wanting to experience the outdoors in the South Waikato in the school holidays.
The district is home to many fantastic walks from short excursions to day treks.
Just south of Putaruru is the Te Waihou Walkway. Just under 5km long, one way, this trail takes walkers along the upper reaches of the Waihou River with views of the crystal clear water.
The Waikato River Trails are about 70 per cent complete. Walkers can choose from trails that link Whakamaru to Atiamuri, Jones Landing to Arapuni and stretches of the river near Lake Karapiro.
Jim Barnett Reserve in Te Waotu is an area of regenerated native bush planted thanks to the efforts of South Waikato Forest and Bird and other volunteers. The reserve provides a range of walking tracks.
