Cow feeding machine display
Tirau farmer Marty Richards will display a feeding system he’s developed at an open day on his farm today.
The farm manager said the eFeeder was borne out of experimenting with a cowshed backing gate and his frustration at dragging a trailer around paddocks for 10 years. Since installing the system in the cowshed on his boss Ross Watkins’ 100-hectare farm, Marty has drastically cut down his labour.
The eFeeder system is surprisingly simple.
Each row of cows leave the shed after being milked and head straight to troughs of palm kernel. They feed until an electric top gate lifts up and gently pushes them away out of the yard.
A demonstration of the eFeeder will be given at the Dairy NZ Open Day at Ross Watkins’ farm at 85 SH1, Tirau from 11.30am until 1.30pm today.
