Netballers win title at tourney
Tokoroa Intermediate Year 8A netball team continued on its winning way taking out Grade B at the 2010 AIMS Netball Tournament in Tauranga.
There were 48 netball teams at the competition from as far south as Christchurch and north as Whangarei.
The first two days saw the team competing in a grading pool of six teams. Tokoroa Intermediate narrowly missed out on the A grade, winning three of five games.
Wins came against Berkley Normal Middle School 32-23 , Albany Junior High School 37-16 and John Paul College 38 - 13. Losses were to Taupo Intermediate 27-21 and Murrays Bay Intermediate 23-21.
All teams were then placed into new pools and Tokoroa played a further three games to qualify for the semifinal and final of the B Grade.
Tokoroa won all three of these games convincingly, beating Otumoetai Intermediate 32-14, Pukekohe Intermediate 27-23 and Fairfield Intermediate 28-17.
Tokoroa then met tough opponents Peachgrove Intermediate in the semi finals and won 28-23. This was a closely fought encounter, which saw the girls play with real determination in atrocious weather.
On the Friday, Tokoroa met Roto- rua Intermediate in the final.
The first 10 minutes saw each team taking time to see what each other was made of with the score tied 7-7.
With some tactical adjustments to Tokoroa’s game plan Tokoroa was able to start to pull away slowly from the opposition. With each quarter the girls gained belief, confidence and determination and were able to win convincingly 34-28.
Coaches Maria Te Kanawa and Caroline Morunga said they were proud of the girls’ achievements.
‘‘It is great that our small town can field a team which was able to beat many of the much bigger school teams,’’ said Te Kanawa.
‘‘It is a huge achievement to come to this tournament for the first time and win the B Grade,’’ said Morunga.
The team was: Dionne Treadaway (captain), Danni-Jane Umaki (vicecaptain), Makaia Riki-Te Kanawa, Ashleigh Murray, Cheyanne Tangihaere-Uerata, Chantae Jenkins, Faith Tai, Jemma Maraku, Choe Punton, Zsalia Ihaka and Karmich Nicols with Manager Dawn Ashworth and Umpire Toni Punton.
The team members want to thank Tokoroa Intermediate’s principal and staff, whanau, friends and the local businesses who have supported them this year.
