Winning has always driven her to compete but beating her male competitors makes it even better.

Forest View High School 15-year-old Hilary Dahm has been selected for the New Zealand mini stocks team.

‘‘I was rapt when I found out,’’ Hilary said. ‘‘ You can race from 12 to 17-years-old and there is a New Zealand team and there are five people in it.’’

Hilary is one of two girls in the team.

Her selection will see her part of the New Zealand mini stocks team in Wellington come February 2011.

‘‘ Last season they were looking around for people and they asked me at one of the last race meetings.’’

She found out about her selection around three weeks ago.

‘‘I have been racing mini stocks since I was 12 and before that I raced go-karts. My whole family is into racing, my two older brothers race and now it is me.’’

‘‘I like the competitiveness and knowing that you can beat the boys. There is a season so it is like a summer sport. There are meetings almost every Friday in Rotorua and some on Saturday if people want to race more than once,’’ she said.

BEATING THE BOYS: Forest View High School student Hilary Dahm has been selected as one of two girls in a team of five for the New Zealand mini stocks team.
