Tokoroa best on board at chess champs
Tokoroa High School’s chess team, the Check Mates, out maneuvered the competition in Taupo to reign supreme at the Central North Island Interschool Chess Championships.
The competition was held two weeks ago featuring 50 students from around the Central North Island.
The Tokoroa team were Saige McMahon, Ranginui Paparoa, Avian Uerata, TJ Raivaru and Chris Meyers. The highest scorer with seven wins from seven games was Tauhara College student Gian Bendicio while Tokoroa High School students Christopher and TJ placed second and third respectively.
Tokoroa High was the school team with the most points.
Coach Billy Maea says: ‘‘ The boys eventually won the tournament because they were all in the top 10 so they were able to accumulate enough points to take out the tournament.’’
They have now qualified for the national final in Auckland on Octo- ber 20 which will feature 13 schools from around New Zealand.
‘‘I was really rapt because our goal was to go to the tournament and learn as much as we could. It was the first time we had played with clocks. They were a bit apprehensive. With that tournament under our belts we will go in to nationals knowing what to expect.’’
Mr Maea says the Taupo tournament was the team’s first formal competition.
‘‘Our goal is to go to the nationals and enjoy ourselves and continue to learn,’’ he says.
