Mobile rowing simulator visits Tokoroa

South Waikato News - - ENTERTAINMENT -

The rowing world championships start at the end of the month on Lake Karapiro, but you can try out the course in Tokoroa on Saturday.

The RowBox will be at Tokoroa’s Youth Park for the Youth Row event of Involve ’10.

The RowBox is a truck trailer developed to promote the rowing championships. It expands and features rowing machines and a simulator of the Karapiro course.

The Youth Row event is the brainchild of two Tokoroa High School students involved in the Stars Programme.

Julius Daniels-Mata and Deyanna Takiri said the idea came after they helped take their school’s year nine students to Lake Karapiro earlier this year.

‘‘We went for a tour where the world champs will be held,’’ Deyanna said. ‘‘We met all these famous rowers, got to go on rowing machines.’’

Alongside the RowBox, Youth Row will offer a range of activities. There will be performances from youth bands, kapa haka groups, hip hop dancers and a magician.

While for kids there will be face painting, a bouncy castle and animal balloons.

Stars is a Pro- gramme run for high school students by the Foundation for Youth Development.
