Despite missing out on a top three placing by half a mark at the national Nga Manu Korero competition, Tokoroa High School student Justus RikiHamana gave a crowd-pleasing performance.

The 15-year-old came fourth out of 15 speakers after delivering his speech at Nga Manu Korero in Dunedin. The competition consisted of four categories – junior English and Maori, and senior English and Maori.

Justus delivered his speech on what makes a true leader.

Tokoroa High School dean of Te Rito, Keinan Ngapo, said Justus’ performance ‘‘was wicked’’.

‘‘I was surprised because during our practices he was there, but he was just ready to deliver his speech. The preparation leading up to was good but there was a stage where he wanted to get up there and do it.’’

Justus was assessed by five judges.
