Young’s mayoral bid fails

South Waikato News - - NEWS -

South Waikato District Council chamber may see the return of a familiar face after Roddy Young was unsuccessful in his quest to be Southland’s mayor.

Preliminary results gave Mr Young 1643 votes, well behind Southland District Mayor Frana Cardno’s 6783. Mrs Cardno is now in her seventh term as mayor.

Mr Young was a surprise candidate in Southland, the former South Waikato District Council employee was an outspoken South Waikato ratepayer who frequently attended council meetings.

Mr Young felt his candidacy had increased voter turn out, even in the neighbouring Invercargill district where he was not a candidate.

‘‘I believe my standing has had an impact, even on the Invercargill mayoralty.’’

‘‘If you take out some of the bigger wards, it would be interesting to see just how close I came,’’ Mr Young said.
