Win­dows ex­plode in fire

Toko­roa fire­fight­ers re­sponded to their third house fire in two months on Mon­day.

The fire at the prop­erty on Philips St had taken hold of the brick home when fire­fight­ers ar­rived just be­fore 2pm.

A neigh­bour said he saw the fire in a rear bed­room of the house and, by the time he could grab a hose, the fire had spread through­out the prop­erty.

Win­dows were ex­plod­ing as the fire spread quickly, he said.

In­ves­ti­ga­tors were at the scene yes­ter­day at­tempt­ing to de­ter­mine its cause.

In Au­gust a fire on the corner of Tieke Place and Kiwi St claimed the life of an 82-year-old woman and de­stroyed a house.

Two weeks later a house on Jack Henry Rd was also de­stroyed by fire.

The house in­volved in Mon­day’s blaze was ex­ten­sively dam­aged. Fire­fight­ers were at the scene for about 90 min­utes.

The Waikato Times said three peo­ple were in­side when the fire started but es­caped un­scathed.
