This week marks National Foster Care Week which recognises the hard work and dedication of foster parents all around New Zealand.

For almost two years Tokoroa couple Paula and Peter Wilson have opened their hearts and home to care for individuals who need it most.

‘‘We just wanted to give back something back to the community. We wanted to be there for people who came into our care,’’ Mr Wilson said.

‘‘I saw this boy walking around the streets all the time and I actually felt sorry for him. We brought him home and he stayed and then we took him into care.’’

Mrs Wilson said she had a loving upbringing and wanted to share that with someone who wasn’t as fortunate.

The couple have one individual in their care and are also available for respite care.

‘‘I love seeing the difference in the young fellow that we have with us now. He came to us with a lot of problems. It is nice to be able to see the progress,’’ Mrs Wilson said.

National Foster Care Week runs from November 1 to 7.
