True Tirau grit tackles K4
Tirau’s Jim McMurray has won the toughest single-day cycle race in New Zealand.
He battled for more than 12 hours to take first in the Cycle City K4 on the Coromandel Peninsula.
Held every four years as part of Adventure Racing Coromandel’s K2 cycling event the race comprises two laps of the K2 which means K4 riders circumnavigate the Coro- mandel Peninsula twice. The race started at 10pm on Friday, October 29 and covered 384kms including 14 major hill climbs – that translates as 4600m of vertical ascent.
Despite battling the dark, the strong winds and persistent rain McMurray set a new course record of 12 hours, 49 minutes and four seconds.
