Blow-up threat­ened

Res­i­dents of sev­eral Toko­roa streets were evac­u­ated from their homes a week ago af­ter a man threat­ened to blow up his house.

Emer­gency ser­vices raced to the area around the in­ter­sec­tion of East Grampian St and Bal­moral Dr at about 6.30pm on Novem­ber 2.

Res­i­dents of the sur­round­ing area were evac­u­ated from their homes af­ter po­lice had re­ceived a call a man was threat­en­ing to blow his house up us­ing gas.

A res­i­dent, who did not want to be named, said af­ter a while a strong smell of gas could be de­tected from where she stood out­side the cor­don.

She could hear po­lice talk­ing to the man on a loud speaker, ask­ing him to come out from his home.

He was even­tu­ally ar­rested and many res­i­dents were not al­lowed back to their homes un­til mid­night said an­other wit- ness. A large num­ber of po­lice in­clud­ing armed of­fend­ers per­son­nel, fire­fight­ers and St John staff were at the scene.
