eWaste fills a container

South Waikato News - - NEWS -

A shipping container worth of old computers, keyboards, monitors and cellphones has been removed from the South Waikato.

The items were dropped off at Tirau, Putaruru and Tokoroa for free collection as part of eDay the nationwide massing of used computer parts, cameras and cellphones. The items are recycled, preventing them from ending up in a landfill.

This year an estimated 77,000 items were left at sites around New Zealand.

The items were collected through- out last week then a container of the unwanted electronics went to Hamilton on Saturday.

National eDay organiser Laurence Zwimpfer said the response nationwide was extraordinary.

‘‘The amount collected filled more than 110 shipping containers which is a phenomenal result.

‘‘It demonstrates that there are a lot of old computers out there, stored in cupboards and garages, and New Zealanders want a solution to disposing of this gear in an environmentally friendly way,’’ Mr Zwimpfer said.
