Earlier this month Tokoroa joined the rest of the world for the first time in celebrating Diwali, or Festival of Lights, one of the biggest festivals on the Indian calendar.

Taupo MP Louise Upston was the guest at the celebration at Tokoroa Cinema.

The festival was opened by Tokoroa JP and Diwali Organising Committee chairman Mohan Lal.

Ms Upston told the crowd this was her first experience of the festival and spoke of the message of love, peace, hope and prosperity that Diwali brings.

The multi-cultural celebration that followed included colourful and memorable performances.

This year’s festival featured a Diwali prayer by Mr Lal and traditional hymn led by Sumeet Lal.

Singer Bradley Phillips was also on hand to lead the crowd in the national anthem.
