Students from Waiariki and South Waikato’s three high schools proved one man’s trash is another man’s treasure on Friday.

Teams of three from the four institutions took part in the second Scrapheap Challenge at the Trade Training Centre in Tokoroa.

The teams were given similar collections of assorted junk, tools and several hours to create – something.

The Waiariki Institute of Technology team of Matt Meredith, David Standring and Crystal Ahipene won the challenge with a heavy-duty wheel chair.

Each team’s creation was vastly different. Tokoroa High School created a three-wheeled cart, Forest View High School a robot and Putaruru College made a handcranked helicopter.

The teams had about five hours to build their creations.
