Conqueror to La Conca
Already the best in the country, by the weekend Andy Schofield will know how he compares to the best in the world.
The Tokoroa Kart Club member is racing at the Rotax Max Challenge World Grand Finals in La Conca, Italy from tomorrow until Saturday.
Schofield is one of 71 competitors in his class.
Earlier this year he won four of the five rounds in the New Zealand Rotax Max Challenge to earn New Zealand’s only junior spot at the world final.
He is accompanied in Italy by his mechanic Brad Tyrrell.
On arrival the pair were randomly assigned one of 71 identical chassis and one of 71 identical engines as well as a fitted seat and tyres.
Tyrrell was then given one day to put the kart together and get the set-up right for Schofield.
Because all competitors in each class must race with the same weight Schofield and his kart will be weighed and the correct amount of lead will be bolted to the kart ensuring it is driver ability that wins the world title.
Before racing tomorrow Schofield has had two days to practise on the track.
The three days of racing includes time trials to determine grid order for the heats, prefinal and ultimately the grand final.
Come Saturday the champion will be determined.
READY, SET: Andy Schofield will take on the world’s best junior karters this week in Italy.
