Al­ready the best in the coun­try, by the week­end Andy Schofield will know how he com­pares to the best in the world.

The Toko­roa Kart Club mem­ber is rac­ing at the Ro­tax Max Chal­lenge World Grand Fi­nals in La Conca, Italy from to­mor­row un­til Satur­day.

Schofield is one of 71 com­peti­tors in his class.

Ear­lier this year he won four of the five rounds in the New Zealand Ro­tax Max Chal­lenge to earn New Zealand’s only ju­nior spot at the world fi­nal.

He is ac­com­pa­nied in Italy by his me­chanic Brad Tyrrell.

On ar­rival the pair were ran­domly as­signed one of 71 iden­ti­cal chas­sis and one of 71 iden­ti­cal en­gines as well as a fit­ted seat and tyres.

Tyrrell was then given one day to put the kart to­gether and get the set-up right for Schofield.

Be­cause all com­peti­tors in each class must race with the same weight Schofield and his kart will be weighed and the cor­rect amount of lead will be bolted to the kart en­sur­ing it is driver abil­ity that wins the world ti­tle.

Be­fore rac­ing to­mor­row Schofield has had two days to prac­tise on the track.

The three days of rac­ing in­cludes time tri­als to de­ter­mine grid or­der for the heats, pre­fi­nal and ul­ti­mately the grand fi­nal.

Come Satur­day the cham­pion will be de­ter­mined.
