It is simply known as the Whanau room and like its name suggests is a place that offers a loving environment and encourages learning.

Cargill Open Plan School launched its Whanau room about one year ago with the hopes of creating a positive learning space for students.

Principal Rhonda Rayner said, ‘‘At the beginning of last year we began devising it and over time it has changed depending on what the needs are or depending on the seasons.

‘‘In summer we tend to have parents arriving to pick up their children and they will just sit in there and chill.’’

Mrs Rayner said the room offered a more comfortable, relaxed environment and meetings were often held in it.

One of the students who uses the space is Princess Fitness - Tangimataiti, who said it was a safe place to complete work.

‘‘Near the end of the term we do cooking on a Wednesday and Thursday. We learn to make different foods and then we cook them at home. I like coming to the Whanau room because I have learned to be a better person.’’
