Crisis response recognised
They sent nearly 650,000 litres of water to the earthquake victims in Christchurch; now NZ Quality Waters in Putaruru have been recognised for their big hearts and their extraordinary business acumen.
NZ Quality Waters marketing and sales manager Wayne Mason said the award, presented at a Progressive Enterprises’ suppliers awards evening last Wednesday, was a big shock.
‘‘We were just happy to be nominated alongside some big names like Coca Cola. When we won we were stunned; we have never received an award like this.
‘‘We were also commended for our contribution to Christchurch’’ Mr Mason said the company, which has a staff of 30, pulled together during the Christchurch earthquake.
‘‘We got a phone call an hour after the earthquake hit asking if we could do something. There was no hesitation, we knew we had to.
‘‘We went from working 10-hour shifts to doing 24-hour shifts to get the water down there.
‘‘We had trucks leave six hours after we got the call, packed with water.’’
Mr Mason said the companies who were to receive water during the aftermath of the earthquake were more then happy to have their water orders delayed.
‘‘Every drop of water that came out of this shop during that week went straight to Christchurch; one hundred per cent,’’ he said.
At the small company tucked away on a Putaruru back road everyone pitched in.
Company director Ian Riley, Mr Mason and the two Donnas on reception work a number of jobs within the business.
‘‘We all know how to do each other’s jobs. There is no aspect of the plant Ian doesn’t know how to operate. We can go from having a corporate meeting to packing up the trucks with water. I think it’s a Kiwi thing.’’
The award, which has pride of place in reception, is a lasting testament to the company’s caring employees.
Besides supplying New Zealand the company exports to Dubai, Australia and the Pacific Islands.
‘‘We are thinking on a global level . . . and it all comes from the Blue Spring 20 minutes up the road, it’s amazing when you think that people around the world are consuming water from Putaruru.’’
