Staff at Balmoral Kindergarten are delighted with their latest survey from the Education Review Office.
In the report the review office said the kindergarten teachers ‘‘engage children in purposeful learning through play and develop respectful and empowering relationships with them.’’
Head teacher Helen Fisher and her staff received high commendations.
‘‘The head teacher successfully develops a team approach and a shared commitment to a philosophy of partnerships for learning involving teachers, children and their parents/whanau,’’ the report said.
Mrs Fisher said the kindergarten received an ‘‘excellent’’ ERO report three years ago and was pleased to see the high quality of education has been recognised once again.
‘‘I was absolutely wrapt and so were the staff. As a team we work very hard to maintain the high standards, quality and performance for our children.’’
The report highlights a number of factors that create an atmosphere of learning.
‘‘Children make choices about their activities in a safe and age-appropriate learning environment, where teachers act as facilitators and support children to develop their enthusiasm for learning,’’ she said.
Mrs Fisher says the key to learning is allowing the child to originate play.
‘‘ We have child-initiated resource-based programmes where we allow the child to choose what they want to do and learn while we step back and facilitate. We hand the power of learning back to the child.’’ she said.
The kindergarten has celebrated the Education Review Office’s report by treating the children to a clown show in the kindergarten.
Mrs Fisher is adamant Tokoroa has some of the best kindergartens in New Zealand.
‘‘Even though we have a low-socio economic climate in Tokoroa it doesn’t mean we can’t provide quality education in our kindergartens and these reports confirm this.’’
Clyde Street, Parounui and David Henry kindergartens have also received positive ERO reports this year.
