WEL wins net­work bid

WEL Net­works will bring high speed broad­band to Toko­roa. The con­tract cov­ers 430,000 homes. WEL chief ex­ec­u­tive Dr Ju­lian Elder said plan­ning would start im­me­di­ately with work sched­uled to be­gin on the 5000km net­work mid next year with com­ple­tion in five years.

Work on build­ing the net­work will start in Wan­ganui, Hamil­ton and Tau­ranga from early next year, fol­lowed by New Ply­mouth with Haw­era and Toko­roa there­after.

Pri­or­ity users have been iden­ti­fied as busi­nesses, schools, health providers and cer­tain branches of res­i­den­tial prop­er­ties.

WEL board chair­man John Spencer said that by win­ning the bid all of the prof­its from the ven­ture would be for the ben­e­fit of the com­mu­nity.

‘‘These new open-ac­cess fi­bre net­works are the fu­ture and will en­hance New Zealand’s com­pet­i­tive­ness and pro­duc­tiv­ity,’’ he said.
