WEL wins network bid
WEL Networks will bring high speed broadband to Tokoroa. The contract covers 430,000 homes. WEL chief executive Dr Julian Elder said planning would start immediately with work scheduled to begin on the 5000km network mid next year with completion in five years.
Work on building the network will start in Wanganui, Hamilton and Tauranga from early next year, followed by New Plymouth with Hawera and Tokoroa thereafter.
Priority users have been identified as businesses, schools, health providers and certain branches of residential properties.
WEL board chairman John Spencer said that by winning the bid all of the profits from the venture would be for the benefit of the community.
‘‘These new open-access fibre networks are the future and will enhance New Zealand’s competitiveness and productivity,’’ he said.
