KEY PROPOSALS IN THE LAND TRANSPORT STRATEGY:
Road safety has been elevated in importance. State highways one and 29 will be the high priority strategic freight corridors to Tauranga’s port. The routes along state highways two and 27 and state highway two through the Karangahake Gorge to the port will not be supported as freight corridors once the expressway is completed. An intermodal freight shift from road to rail is strongly supported in the RLTS. A strong push to extend the Waikato Expressway from just south of Cambridge to the intersection of state highways one and 29 at Piarere.
