Southern belles the big producers
When it comes to producing milk, South Waikato cows are the cream of the crop.
The New Zealand Dairy Statistics Report for 2009/10 has been published by Livestock Improvement and DairyNZ and makes for interesting reading.
The report finds South Waikato herds are the Waikato region’s biggest producers with the highest average litres and milksolids a herd at 1,347,158litres and 116,294 average kilograms milksolids.
The report said there are 386 dairy herds in the South Waikato with an average herd size of 368 cows.
In all there are around 142,000 dairy cows in the district being farmed on 48,971hectares.
The total number of herds and herd sizes varied considerably in the Waikato region.
Hamilton City had just 18 herds and just over 4500 cows, Waipa District had 585 herds and 192,613 cows, Otorohanga had 380 herds and 131,350 cows and Hauraki had 412 herds and 113,554 cows.
The report shows the Waikato is undoubtedly the heart of dairying in New Zealand.
More than 30 per cent of the country’s 11,691 dairy herds are in the Waikato.
New Zealand has a total of 4.4million cows, 1,120,653 or 26 per cent of which are in the Waikato.
There are 11,691 dairy herds in New Zealand, 8973 in the North Island and 3571 in the Waikato.
In the 2009/ 10 season New Zealand dairy companies processed 16.5billion litres of milk, containing 1438billion kgs of milksolids.
Of this the Waikato region’s herds contributed 341,479,152kgs of milksolids or on average 1,102,657litres and 95,626kgs of milksolids a herd.
The Holstein-Friesian is the region’s most common breed but only just.
Holstein-Friesians made up 39.2 per cent of dairy cows compared to the 38.6 per cent which are HolsteinFriesian/ Jersey crossbreeds.
