Putaruru sprinter Robyn Engels has shown real promise in her first year at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics Championship.

Competing in Hastings last week Robyn raced in the junior 100m and 200m events. Both events featured heats, quarterfinals and semi-finals to find the finalists.

In the finals Robyn ran 12.77 seconds in the 100m to finish in sixth place. Just 0.2 of a second separated the 14-year-old from the race winner. In the 200m final Robyn ran a time of 25.77 seconds to claim fourth place and miss out on a bronze medal by .001 of a second.

Coach Chris Williams was impressed with his charge’s efforts and called he a champion in the making.

‘‘You could not question her attitude, her times where exceptional for her age. This competition will hold Robyn in good stead for her future in the sport.’’
