Elderly cat abandoned in box

South Waikato News - - NEWS/OPINION -

South Waikato SPCA inspectors are seeking information about a cat left abandoned in a box last week.

About 10.30am on Monday, December 13, two couriers driving along Balmoral Drive found a cardboard box on the side of the road.

Deciding to investigate the pair read a message written across the top of the sealed box that said ‘‘Sophie is my name. I am about 14-15 years old. We have moved to South Island.’’

The now alarmed couriers opened it quickly to find a female cat inside.

The pair brought Sophie to the SPCA shelter in Giles St and gave her to South Waikato SPCA Inspector Lorna Hutchinson.

‘‘We don’t know how long Sophie was sealed inside the box and when last she had eaten or had access to water,’’ Mrs Hutchinson said. ‘‘ When she arrived here, she went straight to the water.’’ Sunday had been a hot and humid day and conditions in the box would have been terrible, she said.

The South Waikato SPCA is appealing for anyone who might know who Sophie belonged to and where her owners have gone to contact the SPCA. Sophie had to be put down last week.

UNWANTED: Sophie was left sealed in a box in Tokoroa last week.
