Con­struc­tion on py­lons in the South Waikato be­gan in Oc­to­ber.

A crack­down on driv­ers by po­lice around the South Waikato helped cut the road toll in the first part of the year.

Op­er­a­tion Trench saw po­lice pulling over driv­ers more than 5km above the speed limit. The op­er­a­tion helped pre­vent any road deaths in the district be­tween Novem­ber and early March.

South Waikato cheese­mak­ers big and small won at the world cheese cham­pi­onships in Wis­con­sin.

Over the Moon won two best in class awards while the Fon­ter­raowned Lich­field cheese fac­tory won a sil­ver medal.

Both or­gan­i­sa­tions had al­ready tasted suc­cess at the na­tional cheese awards.
