Brothers ready for race meet

Nine New Zealand powerboating titles will be up for grabs at Lake Maraetai in the new year.

Mangakino is hosting the national powerboating championships for the first time on January 2 and 3.

The event has previously hosted the North Island championships.

So far 35 entries have been received.

Home town hero Allan Steiner will be among the favourites. Born and raised in Mangakino, Steiner will be competing again in his Series 3000 boat Misty Blue. Steiner was victorious in this year’s event. In 2011 he will face competition from his brother Roy in his boat Shockwave. Allan Steiner’s wife Noeline said both brothers were competitive so theirs would be a good race to watch. The pair would be competing in honour of their parents Joseph and Valerie Steiner. ‘‘To be able to win a title would be an honour for the brothers, as this event is done in their home town where they were Noeline said.

Noeline, who is also the secretary and organiser of the event, will be competing on the second day of the racing. She will be the only female driver racing in her class.

The event has free entry and will feature several food stalls.
