Firemen rescue trapped mare
Putaruru firemen have a female fan of a different sort – Jesse the horse.
Jesse, a 20-year-old mare, had to be rescued by fire officers in late December after a wooden step she was being led up collapsed, trapping her at the Glenshea St property.
Neighbour Dan Birks said Jesse’s owner was leading her up the ‘‘old, slippery’’ steps to a higher garden paddock where she could graze when her hind legs became stuck.
The pair soon realised they couldn’t save Jesse on their own, so called the volunteer firefighters to lend a hand.
The firemen arrived and began dismantling a nearby gazebo and part of a fence to extract Jesse.
‘‘She would have been [stuck] in there for at least two hours,’’ Mr Birks said.
‘‘But she was really good and handled it pretty well.’’ A vet was called to sedate her. She was left with only a few scratches to her hind legs and was able to be led away by her owner. Mr Birks said firefighters commented that it was one of their more unusual callouts.
