Body taken from river bed

The body of a 78-year-old Taupo man who went missing late on Fri­day night was re­trieved on Sun­day morn­ing by po­lice divers.

His body was found on the bed of the Waikato River about 800m down­stream from the Lake Taupo Con­trol Gates.

The crews of the Taupo-based Youth­town Res­cue Heli­copter and the Mighty River Power Coast­guard Lake Taupo shal­low wa­ter res­cue craft saw the man’s body just be­fore 9pm on Satur­day night.

Mem­bers of the Po­lice Na­tional Dive Squad trav­elled from Welling­ton and the man’s body was re­cov­ered just be­fore 3am.

His death, which is not con­sid­ered sus­pi­cious, has been re­ported to the coro­ner.
