Body taken from river bed
The body of a 78-year-old Taupo man who went missing late on Friday night was retrieved on Sunday morning by police divers.
His body was found on the bed of the Waikato River about 800m downstream from the Lake Taupo Control Gates.
The crews of the Taupo-based Youthtown Rescue Helicopter and the Mighty River Power Coastguard Lake Taupo shallow water rescue craft saw the man’s body just before 9pm on Saturday night.
Members of the Police National Dive Squad travelled from Wellington and the man’s body was recovered just before 3am.
His death, which is not considered suspicious, has been reported to the coroner.
