Final steps due on path to events centre

South Waikato News - - NEWS -

A decision on the design and builder of the South Waikato’s $5 million indoor events centre is due tomorrow.

South Waikato District Council will discuss the design of the centre during a publicexcluded portion of its meeting tomorrow.

The council has four designs from four different firms to consider. The quartet of designs were shortlisted from 25 proposals for the events centre.

A committee including mayor Neil Sinclair, district councillors, council staff and experts in events, sport and recreation had considered the four designs during two meetings in December.

Tomorrow one of the four plans would be recommended to council.

Mr Sinclair said the favoured design needed ‘‘to be tweaked’’ and further negotiations with the firm behind that design had taken place last week.

The indoor events centre will be located at the Tokoroa Memorial Sportsgrounds.

It will feature a two-court hall with permanent seating for 300 with an increased capacity when only one court is in use, a flat floor area to suit the likes of martial arts, dance and aerobics, and a meeting/ function room for conferences and small civic or community events.
