Driver dies as truck rolls
Mushrooming pylons to ensure power link
Construction of the North Island grid upgrade is plain to see in the South Waikato.
Work is under way on pylons for the project at Arapuni, the site of fierce opposition to the planned pylons from South Waikato District Council and residents of the township.
The pylons under construction, pictured, are among about 99 to be built across the South Waikato.
The pylons form part of a grid upgrade running from Whakamaru to South Auckland aimed at increasing the stability of power supply to Auckland.
Work began on pylons in the South Waikato last year but until now has largely taken place in forestry blocks.
CRASH: Rotorua police are investigating the circumstances leading up to a fatal road crash on Monday. The accident occurred at about 8am on State Highway 30 between Upper Atiamuri and Rotorua. It appeared the driver became trapped in the cab and died as a result of injuries sustained after his truck rolled. Traffic in both directions was diverted to side roads for several hours.
