Surf teams power over Leam­ing­ton

Surf As were too strong for Leam­ing­ton at Leam­ing­ton on Satur­day win­ning 58-0.

Surf dom­i­nated through­out the match run­ning in eight tries, six of which were con­verted by ace goal kicker Sam McLeod. It took Surf 12 min­utes to score their first points from bro­ken play when Azza Pene dot­ted down in the cor­ner 7-0.

Points kept mount­ing at a steady pace through two en­su­ing penal­ties bring­ing the score to 13-0.

In the 24th minute zippy winger Sean McKain scored af­ter a great build-up led by the Surf pack 20-0.

Four min­utes later flanker John Balvert scored from be­ing set up by prop Herb Leef 25-0.

Lock Ash Hay­wood was next to score af­ter more solid for­ward build up 32-0. The last seven min­utes of the first half re­mained score­less through bet­ter de­fence by Leam­ing­ton and some un­struc­tured loose play by Surf.

Wal­ter Downey drew first blood in sec­ond half scor­ing off a charge-down de­fen­sive kick 39-0. Al­though they main­tained dom­i­nance, Surf again be­came un­struc­tured, fail­ing to set a plat­form from tack­led ball, throw­ing fifty-fifty passes and em­a­nat­ing the Sonny Bill Wil­liams pass which saw them blow sev­eral op­por­tu­ni­ties. In the 66th minute half-back Hoots Wil­son scored from bro­ken play 46-0.

Prop Herb Leef was next to score a try af­ter sus­tained for­ward pres­sure on the Leam­ing­ton try line 51-0.

Flanker John Balvert in a daz­zling in­di­vid­ual ef­fort, scored the fi­nal try just on full time 58-0. Player of the day went to prop Herb Leef, for his solid scrum­mag­ing, strong de­fence and good gen­eral play.

Surf se­nior Bs were easy win­ners by 43 to 8 in the cur­tain raiser.
